Harold Schuitmaker has been in practice for 34 years. He attended Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University, and received his law degree from Wayne State University School of Law. He is experienced in litigation, real estate, planning and zoning, construction law, tax issues, corporate, labor, township/municipal law, and in trust and estate planning. He also has an extensive governmental law background and has represented Michigan governmental entities in a wide range of litigation, including, but not limited to civil rights actions, negligence and wrongful death actions, contract enforcement, community development, variance and zoning matters, environmental law land use plans, referendums and community cable television. He has appeared in over 1,200 trials in Circuit and District Court. He has been involved in proceedings before the Michigan Supreme Court, the Michigan Court of Appeals and the following Michigan administrative boards and commissions: Department of Labor, Bureau of Employment Training, Board of Health & Safety Compliance and Appeals, Department of Civil Rights, Department of Attorney General, State Employees Retirement Board, Employment Security Commission, Tax Tribunal, Liquor Control Commission, Secretary of State License Appeal Board, Department of Agriculture, Department of Natural Resources. He is Public Administrator for Van Buren County; a Fellow of the Michigan Bar Association; and a member of the American Arbitration Association, Probate Council of the Michigan State Bar, Michigan Municipal Attorneys Association and Michigan Township Association. Matthew R. Cooper, former law clerk to a Kalamazoo Circuit Court Judge, is a native of Portage, Michigan. He graduated Cum Laude from Western Michigan University in 1986, and received his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1989. His areas of expertise are personal injury, wrongful death, litigation, insurance law, contract law and municipal law. He has prosecuted cases for a number of Michigan townships. He is experienced in multimillion dollar litigation and has handled cases in Illinois, Maryland and Indiana at both the Federal and State court level. At the trial court level, he has appeared in cases in ten Michigan counties and the United States Western District Federal Court. He has appeared before the Michigan Supreme Court and has had a number of cases before the Michigan Court of Appeals. He has been involved in proceedings before the Secretary of State License Appeal Board, Worker's Compensation Board, Department of Attorney General, State Employee's Retirement Board, Department of Labor Licensing Board, Department of Labor Wage/Hour Division, Department of Natural Resources, Employment Security Commission, Department of Transportation and the Teamsters Central States Retirement Board. Membership in community organizations include Paw Paw Rotary Club, Legal Explorer Post Advisor, Legal Aid Bureau of Southwest Michigan, Van Buren and Kalamazoo County Bar Associations, Paw Paw Optimist Club, Hospice Legal Volunteer, Van Buren County Emergency Response Board, Masonic Lodge, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Michigan Trial Lawyers Association, and a Fellow of the Michigan Bar Association.

 

 
 

Tonya Schuitmaker has been practicing law since 1993. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Business, from Michigan State University in 1990. She graduated Cum Laude from the Detroit College of Law. While attending law school, she interned with Michigan Supreme Court Justice Dorothy Comstock Riley in 1991; and in 1992, she interned with the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office. In addition to being licensed to practice law in Michigan, she is also licensed to practice law in the states of Illinois and Florida. Her areas of expertise are those relating to business, estate planning, real estate and municipal law. In August of 2000 Governor Engler appointed Ms. Schuitmaker to a four-year term on the State of Michigan Board of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons.  In 2002, the Governor appointed Ms. Schuitmaker to the State of Michigan Board of Medicine. Ms. Schuitmaker previously has served as President of Inter-Care Community Network Board, Community Corrections Advisory Board, is a former board member of the Van Buren County Mental Health and Habitat for Humanity for the Eastern Van Buren County.  Vice Chair of the Van Buren County Republican Party, Vice Chair for the 6th Congressional District Republican Party, Representative Assembly Member to the State Bar of Michigan.  Community and Service organizations supported by Ms. Schuitmaker are: Van Buren County Historical Museum Board Member, South Haven Association of University Women, Michigan State Alumni Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, Paw Paw Rotary, Paul Harris Fellow, Paw Paw Optimist Club, Member of St. Mark's Church, and the Van Buren County Bar Association. Theresa Cypher has been practicing law since 1999. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1984. She attended the University of Michigan and received a Master of Science degree in 1989. She graduated with Honors from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1999. Her areas of expertise are estate planning, real estate, family and juvenile law. Committees, organizations and services supported by Ms. Cypher are the Van Buren County Bar Association, the Van Buren County Adult Community Protection Team, the Eastern Van Buren County Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross. She is an active member of the St. Mary's Parish in Kalamazoo and currently serves as Chair of the St. Mary Parish Pastoral Council and is a member of the Diocese of Kalamazoo Review Board.
